Overcoming Boredom and Lack of Inspiration When Designing Weekly
While consistent income and recurring revenue are at the heart of building a sustainable floral business, the flip side of that consistency can feel daunting. The pressure to show up every week, delivering fresh designs, can lead to creative burnout and boredom. But what if you could reframe your mindset and find joy in the repetition? Overcoming boredom and lack of inspiration is possible, and it may not even be something you need to worry about after reading this.
In this post, I’m sharing my personal journey of how I overcame creative blocks, found inspiration, and continued to show up for my hotel clients week after week. Whether you’re struggling to stay inspired or worried about running out of creative ideas, these strategies will help you build a floral business that’s both profitable and fulfilling.
Make It Fun and Take the Pressure Off
When I first started working with hotels, I made a conscious decision to make it fun. Instead of seeing my weekly installs as a chore, I viewed them as an opportunity to get paid to learn, try new things, and experiment. There’s no need to put immense pressure on yourself to be perfect every week. Trust in your skills and know that every week is an opportunity to learn.
In the beginning, there will be a lot of trial and error, and that’s okay. Learning through doing is essential. Think of it like when you learned to walk or ride a bike—no one masters something without taking a few wobbly steps first. The same goes for floral design.
Create a System and Structure
One of the things that helped me stay inspired was developing a system. I had a set of vases I loved, knew how to group them, and stuck to monochromatic, architectural designs that fit my aesthetic. This structure gave me a framework to work within, which freed me up creatively. It became a challenge to use the flowers and vases I had in new ways each week. I talk a lot about designs in the Hotel Florist Profit Method course and the book here!
I also loved finding what flowers were on sale, like discovering a hidden gem at a sale rack in a store. Creating designs that fit my budget while experimenting with different flowers and colors kept things exciting and is one way to overcome boredom. This weekly routine became less about perfection and more about the joy of discovery.
Allow Room for Grace
Not every week will be groundbreaking, and that’s okay. Give yourself grace on the weeks when you feel uninspired or stretched thin. It’s completely normal to repeat designs, especially when your energy is low. What’s important is showing up and doing your best with what you have, knowing that good enough is sometimes enough.
And guess what? Most of the time, your clients won’t notice if you’re reusing elements from a previous week. We often hold ourselves to impossible standards, but no one else is scrutinizing your work the way you are.
Find Inspiration Everywhere
Inspiration isn’t limited to the flower market. You can find it in home decor, architecture, and even your travels. Instagram and other content platforms are rich with creative inspiration—sometimes, seeing the simplest design in the background of a video can spark a new idea for your next installation.
Give yourself permission to draw inspiration from everyday life. Trust that your passion and curiosity will keep you motivated and inspired. Want more tips on how to plan your designs? Check out this blog!
Rotate and Repurpose Designs
One practical way to overcoming boredom is by creating a set of go-to designs. I chatted on a podcast episode with Christi Lopez of the Floral Business Academy about this! You can create five or six designs and rotate through them over several weeks. Adding small tweaks like changing the vase arrangement or flower colors can make each install feel fresh, even if the structure is similar. This method keeps things manageable while still offering variety.
Conclusion
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the idea of designing weekly, remember that creativity thrives on structure, grace, and fun. You already have the talent and passion; it’s about trusting that you can bring that creativity to the table every week. Embrace the process, find inspiration in the world around you, and give yourself the grace to evolve as a designer and you won't have to worry so much about overcoming boredom in your design journey. Your journey as a florist is meant to be enjoyed, not rushed.
